Timber Treatments Lancaster
Fungicidal/insecticidal infestation can be found in buildings and homes, and where discovered remedial action should be undertaken to prevent spread and development.
There are two main categories of fungal decay described as either Wet Rot or Dry Rot:
Wet Rot
There are a number of types of wet rot fungus but typically require a moisture content of above 30%.
The most well-known being coniophora puteana.
Timbers effected by wet rot fungus can be found both on the outside and inside of the home, for example external windows, doors, internal floors & skirting boards etc.
Dry Rot
Can flourish in timbers with a lower moisture content than would support an attack of wet rot.
The eradication of dry rot can be much more expensive to treat as it has the ability to grow through masonry, brickwork and behind plaster etc. and therefore can spread to a much greater extent.
Another common infestation found in buildings is caused through beetle attack.
Insecticidal infestation
The most common of timber attacking species are the wood boring beetles. The life cycle is characterised by the adult beetle laying its eggs onto the timber. The second change takes place where the eggs mature to larva. The third phase of change is to metamorphise into pupa and finally, into the emerging adult beetle which then re-infest the timber to start a new life cycle. The main damage to the timber is caused by the lava by tunnelling through the timber. The infestation unless treated can lead to structural damage/collapse to the infested timber, critical to load-bearing timbers for example.
